Community Programs

Project ChildSafe - Gun Locks - Project ChildSafe is a nationwide program dedicated to promoting safe firearms handling and storage practices among all firearms owners through the distribution of free gun locking devices.  The program is supported by a U.S. Department of Justice Grant, the National Shooting Sports Foundation and is a component of Project Safe Neighborhoods.  The Irmo Police Department is proud to be part of this program and will provide free gun locking devices during normal business hours (there is no limit to the number of locks).

Child Seat Inspection - We have four full time personnel available for Child Seat Inspection every Friday from 11:00 to 2:00.  They can assist with every type of vehicle and Child Seat.  Please call (803) 781-8088  to for an appointment.  Unintentional injuries are the number one killer of children under 14 years of age.  It is always a smart idea to have a certified inspector verify your installation (the inspection is free).

Community Identification Program - This service is provided free to all resident children from birth until 17 years old.  You will receive a booklet that contains places to enter the complete information on your child, a photo and information on how to keep your child safe.  An officer will be happy to take your child's fingerprints so you can be assured a good set.  The program is also available to residents who suffer from Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia.  This service is available on Tuesdays from 9:00 to 10:00 am and then again from 3:00 to 4:00 pm.  Your child must be present (a record will be maintained at the police department).

Community Relations Program - Our officers are available for scheduled presentations at your daycare, school, church, workplace or any other community event.  We offer many specialized programs (including McGruff the Crime Dog)  to fit your needs.  These programs have to be scheduled in advance through the Community Relations Officer (they are free of charge).

Serving Our Seniors (S.O.S.) - The Irmo Police Department is in the process of creating a new program called S. O.S. This program will allow the department to assist the  seniors in town.  We will offer community programs for education ("How to Avoid Scams"), and various safety programs.  S.O.S will allow us to contact seniors to make sure they are safe during times of need (storms and disasters).   If you or someone you know is interested in the program please contact Officer Anderson of Officer Fulks at (803) 781-8088 to be added to the list.
